Standing Ovation's Afterschool Enrichment Dance Program
In the past 30 years, the occurrence of obesity in children has more than
doubled and it is now estimated that one in five children in the United
States are overweight. Now, there is an increased prevalence of obesity
being seen even in younger children, including preschoolers. While more
children are becoming overweight, the heaviest children are getting even
heavier. As a result, childhood obesity is regarded as the most common
nutritional disorder of our children and adolescents.
As a mother of two in the Spotsylvania County School district and a local
business owner of Ari’s House of Dance & Performing Arts Studio, here in
Stafford, Ari wanted to come up with a fun and unique program to
encourage our kids to get healthy and stay active. Moreover, allowing them
something safe, fun and constructive to do during after school hours. So,
she and her fellow dance teachers felt the need to address and “tackle” the
alarming statistics of overweight children in our schools. At the same time,
we wanted to introduce a program that would provide an opportunity for
kids to not only raise funds for their schools, but to give back to their
communities as well.
ABOUT DANCE
Dance…No matter who you are or where you are from we can all be united
in the creativity of dance!
Dance in the US at the moment is the ‘Flavour of the month’ with the rise in
popularity of TV shows like ‘So you think you can dance?’and ‘Dancing With
the Stars’, 'America's best Dance Crew', dance films such as Billy Elliot,
High School Musical and Step Up, celebrity dancers such as George
Sampson and with the hit film FAME! set to make a come back children are
all wanting to dance in some way. From break dance to ballroom there is a
style of dance to suit every child.
Dance is a great way of uniting children within a school setting; it can break
down social barriers, encourage interaction amongst diverse groups and
heighten awareness for other cultures. Dance is also a great way of
building confidence, creativity, self esteem, instilling discipline and self
control. The endorphins released when dancing give children a great
sense of euphoria, social well being and a relief from some of the
pressures they face within the ‘growing-up’ process.
Dancing is a great way of getting children active and encouraging a healthy
lifestyle. It is an aerobic activity which is proven to help the heart and lungs
healthy. It is possible to burn 265calories in each dance session which
helps to combat the topical issue of obesity. Dancing also has positive
effects on several fitness components including muscle strength, agility,
coordination, flexibility and balance. Improvements in these components
can all lead to a healthier body and mind!
